Hardywood

Revitalizing hospitality space and consolidated brewing operations for Hardywood’s Scott’s Addition location.

From a vacant warehouse to their current, renovated space, Hardywood is a part of the movement to bring life to Scott’s Addition neighborhood and and the city’s brewery scene. This redesign was driven by a desire to make Hardywood a one-of-a-kind, signature brewery experience. Showcasing the brewery process, converting an asphalt parking lot into outdoor seating, making wayfinding more intuitive, bring the brand presence forward, and the introduction of food service through a new pizza kitchen were the primary goals of the project.

APPROACH

The pizza kitchen creates an easily maintainable, but still accessible, food service point of contact and puts the large pizza ovens on display. Hardywood is now able to directly provide a food service option for their guests that was previously only achieved through food trucks. The patio is designed to support gathering for large events, such as concerts, while still providing a cozy, intimate setting for individual groups. The raised decking acts as both a suitable seating element for larger gatherings and a divider for smaller table groupings and benching. Uplighting, greenery, string lights, and umbrellas help define space and add to the ambiance.

A coat of a vibrant paint and large logo graphic on the building helps visitors know Hardywood’s location from a distance. In the barrel room, the design showcased the brewing process with large steel barrels front and center, hit with spotlighting and surrounded by a wood frame to further support the priority of the barrels in the space. A large mural telling the story of the process surrounds the opening and speaks to the mission of Hardywood to educate its patrons.

MEASURING OUTCOMES

Since the renovation, Hardywood has continued establishing themselves as one of Richmond’s signature breweries and has been published extensively.
